The U.S. currently imports 80% of its rare earth elements.
The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated $32 million toward scientific studies into ways to produce rare earth elements domestically. Right now, the U.S. imports 80% of all its rare earth metals, which are necessary for the production of key energy technologies. Developing ways to produce rare earth elements will enable solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle components to be completely made in the U.S.
“By producing rare earth elements and critical minerals here at home, we’ll create good-paying jobs while enhancing national security and securing the supply chains we need to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
